L'edizione originale è costituita da tre diverse edizioni contemporanee, in inglese, francese e tedesco, tutte del novembre 1973: 1. «A Voyage on the North Sea» (London, Petersburg Press, tiratura di 1100 esemplari di cui i primi 100 con allegato un film: «Un voyage en mer du Nord»); 2. «Un voyage en mer du Nord» (Bruxelles - London, Hossmann - Petersburg Press, tiratura di 1010 esemplari, di cui 10 con allegato il film); 3. «Eine Reise auf der Nordsee» (Köln - London, Verlag M. Dumont Schauberg - Petersburg Press, tiratura unica di 1000 esemplari). Traduzione italiana del testo: "Prima di tagliare le pagine, il lettore diffiderà della lama che avrebbe usato in questa occasione. Spero che rinunci a questo gesto e tenga per sé quest’arma, questo pugnale, questo oggetto burocratico che con l’improvvisa luce di un lampo potrebbe trasformarsi in un cielo nebuloso. La premura è lasciata al lettore attento a scoprire la ragione che ha portato alla pubblicazione di questo volume. Egli si avvarrà se necessario di qualche lettura tratta dall’abbondante produzione attuale. Vietato tagliare le pagine". Testo dell'edizione francese: " Avant de couper les pages le lecteur se méfiera du couteau qu’il manipulerait à cette occasion. Je souhaite qu’il renonce à ce geste et garde auprès de lui cette arme, ce poignard, cet objet de bureau qui pourrait avec la soudaineté d’un éclair se transformer en ciel vague.
